Lyne Bessette, the Member of Parliament for the Brome- Missisquoi riding, announced on Friday she will not be running for re-election, citing personal reasons and a need to care for herself. The news comes less than two years after she was elected, and in the shadow of looming rumours of a fall election.
In a press release announcing the news, Bessette expressed gratitude for having been elected and pride in the work she considers accomplished over the last two years, and committed to continue in her role until the end of the current term.
The local riding association announced the selection of culture and communications union leader Pascale St-Onge as Bessette’s successor the following day at a press conference in Orford.
