Students from Waterloo Elementary School’s (WES) K4, K5, and grade 3 classes came together on Friday to celebrate Earth Day by spending several hours cleaning up Robinson Park.
The school’s grade 4 class also participated in the annual event, but they were tasked with tackling the school grounds. They worked with the lights off in order to conserve energy. In a press release, kindergarten teacher Lysa Fournier congratulated the students’ participation.
“With climate change and global warming making their presence known throughout the world, it was very important for our school to showcase good habits in terms of nature preservation to our students,” Fournier wrote in a statement following the school’s efforts on Earth Day.
According to Fournier, students were equipped with gloves and garbage bags to pick up any debris uncovered by the melted snow. There was also a group of students from cycle one that took on the beach cleaning duties. Fournier noted that the kids dedication never wavered.
They were determined to look through the mud and brush to find garbage left behind after a long winter, she explained. The first cleaning team also got a special visit from Waterloo Mayor Jean-Marie Lachapelle, as he applauded their green initiative and community spirit.
